Argentine farmers fight against Monsanto

Monsantos Argentine unit planned to charge $15 per ton on shipments of Roundup Ready soy from Argentina in countries where its seeds are patented. Argentinian farmers will travel to Europe to prevent the agricultural giant from using European courts to break Argentine laws. They plan to tell the European Patent Office that because Monsanto doesn't have a patent on Roundup Ready soy in Argentina, it should not be able to collect royalties on soy imported into Europe from Argentina.

St. Louis Business Journal: Argentine farmers head to Europe in Monsanto fight

Syngenta unapproved GM maize sold world wide

For four years GMO giant Syngenta sold and used a Bt maize variety, which had never been approved. "All current plantings and seed stock have been identified and either destroyed or isolated for future destruction," the company announced and said the unapproved "Bt10" maize could have been exported to Canada, Argentina, Japan, South Africa, Uruguay, the European Union, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, the Philippines, China, Russia, and South Korea. Hull said Syngenta informed the U.S. government about the mix-up between the Bt10 and Bt11 varieties in "mid-December," but did not inform the public because "this is not a food safety issue whatsoever." EU official played down the significance of the problem.

Saveourseeds Dossier on the Syngenta case

Washington Post: Syngenta Says It Sold Wrong Biotech Corn

Dow Jones: USDA Investigates Sale Of Unapproved Corn Seed By Syngenta

Nature: US launches probe into sales of unapproved transgenic corn

Syngenta statement

Friends of the Earth Press Release

Reuters: EU Says Unapproved Syngenta GMO Maize Sets No Risk

Background: Can plants and humans re-write their DNA?

In a discovery that has flabbergasted geneticists, researchers have shown that plants can overwrite the genetic code they inherit from their parents, and revert to that of their grandparents. The finding, published in "Nature", challenges textbook rules of inheritance, which state that children simply receive combinations of the genes carried by their parents.

Cress overturns textbook genetics

EU-Commission confirms position on GMO legislative

The new European Commission agreed today to:- push through new approvals of GM foods regardless of the lack of consensus over their safety by EU member states- submit to the Environment Council proposals to get countries to lift their bans on GM products- approve GM crops for cultivation without proper (so called "coexistence") legislation to avoid the contamination of the countryside by GMOsCommission statement

Commission: Questions and Answers on the Regulation of GMOs in the European Union

Friends of the Earth PR: European Commission to ram GM foods through

Reuters via PlanetArk: EU States Overruled on GMOs by Own Deadlock

EU Observer: Commission set to push ahead with new GMOs

NGOs demand new GMO policy in Brussels

Major European NGOs demanded a new GMO policy from the EU Commission, respecting the public opinion and needs of European farmers and regions. They especially criticised the Commissions co-existence approach. A legal opinion presented accuses the Commission of "advising Member States to adopt coexistence measures that are incompatible with the aims of present EU legislation".

Press release

Legal advise, Paul Lasok

EU-Commission to discuss GMO position

Europe should press ahead with authorising more genetically modified (GMO) foods despite overwhelming opposition among European consumers, a draft EU document, obtained by Reuters suggests. The six new Commissioners for agriculture, environment, trade, research, industry and food safety will present a draft document on Tuesday 22nd regarding how to proceed with pending GMO approvals, seed purity, coexistence and national bans of EU approved GMOs.

Reuters: EU to push for GMO foods despite opposition

Internal Communication of the Commissioners

Foodproduction daily: European Commission takes stock of GM food ingredients
